Farely Mowat's best-loved book tells the splendidly entertaining story of his boyhood on the Canadian prairies. Mutt's pedigree was uncertain, but his madness was indisputable. He climbed tress and ladders, rode passenger in an open car wearing goggles and displaying hunting skills that bordered on sheer genius. He was a marvelous dog, worthy of an unusual boy growing up in a raw, untamed wilderness.

We really enjoyed this book, but it's not one I could hand my child as there is a lot of swearing. Because of this it's not one we will be able to keep, but we really enjoyed reading it aloud together.

The Dog Who Wouldn't Be Farley Mowat 9780771064647 Books Reviews

Anyone who loves dogs should read this book. Hands down, this is the funniest dog book ever written. I've read The Dog Who Wouldn't Be at least a dozen times over the years and it still makes me laugh. Farley Mowat really knows how to tell a story and you'll come to wish Mutt had been your dog. He was one of a kind and the episodic tales will have you in stitches while shaking your head in amazement. One of my high school teachers commented about the title, "It should have been called The Dog That Wouldn't Be because 'Who' only applies to a person." I had to disagree and so will you Mutt deserved to be called a Who.

I was happy to find a hard cover edition because I have already gone through 3 paperback copies -- although one reason is that some were loaned out and never came back. Sorry, friends, but this copy is now part of my permanent library. Get your own. This edition is missing the illustrations (one per chapter heading) but still deserves five stars. The seller shipped promptly.
THIS IS ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE BOOKS I HAVE TWO OR THREE COPIES OF IT. AND I HAVE READ IT SO MANY TIMES AND I LOVE THE BOOK AS MUCH AS I DID WHEN I FRIST READ IT. ITS MR MOWATS BEST BOOK. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Farley Mowat is a fine story teller. He presents an excellent story with an enjoyable insight into his relationship with various animals in addition to his dog, Mutt. His honest affection for all living things is apparent in all his writing. There are some folks that may have different opinions about the interaction of the critters he chooses to portray, but no one can deny the reality of those encounters. Mutt is an amazing dog, possessing almost human traits. That is something all of us see in our pets or other animals we observe. Farley Mowat has the ability to capture and portray those traits. Whether we agree or disagree, he presents reality honestly and skillfully. The author gets five stars, but the hard cover on low quality paper takes away from his masterpiece. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has ever observed animals, or had a pet.
This isn't a "how to" book. It's not an instructional on playing chords, scales or arpeggios, it's a reference. An encyclopedia as another review put it. If used as such, it's a good book. Unfortunately, I already have all of the info in other books. I have already begun using it for a reference though. Especially the chords and arpeggios. If you're looking for a book about application, look elsewhere but if you need a quick reference, it delivers.
I just love this book! My sister introduced it to me when I was visiting. It is so well written and funny at times I was laughing out loud. I haven't read anything I enjoyed this much in a very long time. I am going to read it again and again and recommend it to others.
Funny book by Farley Mowat. Based on true events, but of course exaggerated. It reveals much about him and his relationship to nature and to animals. Although I don't believe in hunting, his accounts are straightforward and I enjoyed them despite my aversion to killing for pleasure. He is a talented writer and though this is meant (I believe) for young adults, it is still quite enjoyable for adults, even seniors. It is entirely G rated.
Bear with me.. this is my first review. I turned 60 in October, and a friend recommended this book.. I laughed out loud, nearly every other page, and thoroughly loved Mowat's writing style.. Didn't hurt that I'm a dog lover.
So - if you haven't read this, buy it. Read it. Cherish it. And pass it on to someone you love.
Good Stuff!
We really enjoyed this book, but it's not one I could hand my child as there is a lot of swearing. Because of this it's not one we will be able to keep, but we really enjoyed reading it aloud together.
